Danfoss DST P070: Compact Pressure Sensor for Heat Pump Applications

Danfoss has launched its new DST P070 pressure sensor, a compact and reliable solution designed specifically for heat pump applications. The sensor addresses the increasing demand for space-saving components and compatibility with a wider range of refrigerants.

Danfoss is addressing the practical implications of adopting new technologies with its new DST P070 pressure sensor, acknowledging the challenges faced by manufacturers in integrating these technologies. The DST P070's compact design and compatibility with A1, A2L, and A3 refrigerants – including R290 and R1234ze – are significant. The increasing adoption of these alternatives to high-GWP refrigerants is driven by stricter environmental regulations and a growing awareness of climate change. The new sensor is design tested to ISO 14903 and is compliant with ATEX Zone 2 and HazLoc standards, indicating a focus on safety and reliability in demanding environments. These certifications are crucial for ensuring the sensor can be used safely in a variety of applications, including those where flammable refrigerants are present.

The DST P070 incorporates backside MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) technology and a bi-metal pressure connection. MEMS technology allows for miniaturisation and improved performance, which are key requirements in modern heat pump systems.

According to Katharina Löhden, Product Manager for Pressure Sensors at Danfoss Sensing Solutions, the DST P070 offers advantages for installers:

“The DST P070 offers the shortest solder tube length on the market, a small body sensor, and a single-brazing point, all designed to make it easier for installers to work within the space constraints in heat pump installations.”

Danfoss has invested in a new high-volume, automated production line in Minden, Germany, to manufacture the DST P070. To respond to growing market demands, Danfoss has expanded production, establishing a new high-volume, automated line in Minden, Germany. This facility sources 70% of its materials within the EU, ensures full parts traceability, and aims for carbon neutrality by 2030. The site is compliant with ISO 14001, ISO 9001, and IATF 16949 standards. These standards ensure the facility meets stringent environmental, quality, and automotive industry requirements. The DST P070's production process emphasises sustainability. Crafted from over 50% recycled stainless steel, the sensor boasts a reduced carbon footprint due to its compact design.

The DST P070 targets the growing heat pump market, where space constraints and refrigerant compatibility are key considerations. As Iro Dragoumi, Segment Manager for HVAC&R at Danfoss Sensing Solutions, notes, the DST P070 addresses this challenge:

“The DST P070 addresses this challenge by offering reliable pressure-sensing technology in a compact design.”

The sensor’s compliance with various safety standards makes it suitable for a range of applications, including those in potentially hazardous environments. This is particularly important as the use of flammable refrigerants becomes more widespread. The new production line suggests Danfoss anticipates sustained demand.
