Star Data Analytics' Ethos: Data-Driven Energy Optimisation
Star Data Analytics employs its award-winning Ethos system to provide data-driven analysis, aiming to save customers money and reduce environmental impact.
Building on their performance optimisation and energy management system, Star Data Analytics’ Ethos system gathers data via sensors and data loggers, subsequently analysing it to pinpoint opportunities for boosting efficiency and curtailing energy use. The insights are then presented on an online dashboard, offering a real-time view of energy consumption data and equipment performance alerts. The system’s architecture includes stand-alone equipment that collects relevant data from refrigeration plants, using a combination of data loggers with sensors, network-based data loggers, or a web API.
According to Star Refrigeration, the Ethos system – coupled with their StarCare maintenance programme – enabled Tesco to realise an average of 10% energy savings across eight distribution centres between January 2022 and September 2023, with a return on investment in under three months. This reportedly translated to 4 GWh of energy saved and a reduction of 835 tonnes of CO2.
BrewDog also employs Star Data Analytics to scrutinise the health of their refrigeration systems and evaluate spare capacity for scope expansion. Asda drives down energy consumption by 35% since 2010 with the help of Star Refrigeration and City Facilities Management.
The Ethos system measures the gap between a refrigeration plant’s current and desired performance and recommends actions to increase efficiency and reduce energy consumption. These insights are displayed on an online dashboard, along with energy usage data and equipment performance alerts to warn of any irregular behaviour. They also provide advice on specific and immediate actions to prevent unforeseen maintenance and energy costs. Ethos monitoring helped a British supermarket retailer customer reduce their annual energy bill.
